Jefferson had been a widower for 19 years before becoming president, so the image of Liberty that was used on coins during his presidency appears on the obverse. She is shown facing to the right side of the coin, and her long hair drops below her shoulder. “LIBERTY” is inscribed at the top . On the bottom is the inscription “3RD PRESIDENCY 1801-1809,” President Jefferson’s gravestone at his Virginia home, Monticello, appears on the reverse, along with the inscription that appears on it. That inscription reads, “HERE WAS BURIED THOMAS JEFFERSON AUTHOR OF THE DECLARATION OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE OF THE STATUTE OF VIRGINIA FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND FATHER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA.” The inscription of his dates of birth and death are also included: “BORN APRIL 2, 1743, O.S. DIED JULY 4, 1825.”
