Late in the day on March 13, 2013 the cry of “Habemus Papem!” (“We have a Pope!”) echoed around the world.
He chose the papal name Francis, in honor of Francis of Assisi, one of the most beloved saints in Catholic history. He was the first Pope to be called Francis. Pope Francis is a Jesuit from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is the first Jesuit and the first South American to become Pope, as well as the first non-European Pope in more than 1,200 years.
