Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, and the first Canadian coins with her portrait were struck in 1953. The original portrait of the Queen was created in England by sculptor Mark Gillick. The portrait was used extensively on United Kingdom coins as well as those of Canada and other Commonwealth nations. It was replaced in 1965 with a new, more mature portrait by Arnold Machin. This collection includes the five Canadian coins from One Cent to 50 Cents that feature the original laureate portrait of Queen Elizabeth II
