America’s First Golden Proof Dollars

America’s First Golden Dollars

This collection boasts three golden dollars – each the key first year of issue in the series.

The first coin is the Sacagawea Dollar was first made in 2000 and was the first circulating U.S. coin to feature an identifiable Native American. It features Sacagawea, the Native American guide for the 1804-1806 Lewis and Clark Expedition that found an overland route to the Pacific and therefore opened the America West to exploration and settlement.

The reverse of the coin features an American eagle in flight, as well as 17 stars to symbolize the 17 states in the Union at the time of Sacagawea’s journey with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Unlike all other coins in circulation, the Sacagawea Dollar was made in a unique golden alloy to make it easily distinguishable from other coins.

The second coin in the collection is the 2007 George Washington Presidential Dollar.  The Washington Presidential Dollar was issued only in early 2007. It was a limited edition of only about 13 weeks, and it has been unavailable from the U.S. Mint in more than a decade.   The Presidential Dollars series was the first U.S. coin series to honor the Presidents, and the Washington coin was the first in the series because Washington was the first President. It is a landmark coin in U.S. history.

The final coin in the collection is the 2019 American Innovation Dollar.  Unlike other ongoing coin programs like State Quarters and Presidential Dollars, this is the first program to include an “introductory” coin. This coin was issued in late 2018, while the regular series starts in early 2019.

The 2018 “introductory” coin is a tribute to George Washington, who as President issued the first U.S. patent in 1790.   The reverse shows Washington’s signature as it appears on the patent, as well as stylized gears to represent industry and innovation.  The program will feature a coin representing an innovation or invention from each state, territory, and Washington, D.C.  Coins will be issued over a 14-year period at the rate of four per year, so each coin is a limited edition of only about 13 weeks.

The reverse of each coin will be a unique design to highlight the featured innovation or invention.   The obverse features the Statue of Liberty; this design will appear on the obverse of all coins in the program.

The coin is struck in the same golden alloy as Native American Dollars and Presidential Dollars.  Each coin is presented in a protective coin capsule and is displayed in a custom box. It is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
