In 2005, the United States Mint introduced a new finish for coins in the official U.S. Mint Set. The finish is known as 'Satin Finish' and gives the coins a distinctive new look that is unique to coins in the Mint Sets. Previously, coins in Mint Sets had the same finish as regular-issue Brilliant Uncirculated coins issued for circulation. This coin is the 2005 Kennedy Half Dollar from the official 2005 U.S. Mint Set the first-ever Kennedy Half Dollar with the 'Satin Finish.' The only way to acquire one is to break open an official 2005 U.S. Mint Set the coin is not available individually from the U.S. Mint. The finish is achieved by sandblasting the face of the coin dies with a fine mixture of sand and glass beads.
