1994 P SMS Jefferson Nickel MS 69 FS

The United States Mint released two Jefferson Nickels with a “matte finish” as part of special commemorative coin sets issued in 1994 and 1997. These two matte finish or matte proof Jefferson Nickels represent intriguing low mintage keys for modern collectors.

The first coin was issued within the Thomas Jefferson Coinage and Currency Set, which was announced as a way to pay tribute to Jefferson’s legacy as the father of America’s decimal coinage and for his role in the creation of the United States Mint. Each set contained an uncirculated version of the 1993-dated Thomas Jefferson Silver Dollar, an uncirculated 1994 Jefferson Nickel, and a 1976 $2 Federal Reserve

Initially, collectors were unaware that the uncirculated 1994 Jefferson Nickel would have a different finish than the regular business strike. After collectors quickly began to note the difference, the United States Mint confirmed that a special finish had been used in order to match the commemorative silver dollar. The finish was created by sandblasting the dies and striking the coins twice to result in what was called a “matte finish” or “matte proof”.

Coin references and coin grading services have considered this finish to make the coins a distinct issue from the regular circulation strike. As such, the mintages of these issues are a fraction of mintages of the circulation strike and traditional proof versions.

The 1994-P Matte Finish Jefferson Nickel had a mintage of 167,703, which is derived from the final sales total for the Coinage and Currency Set.This Compares to a mintage of 722,160,000 for the circulation strike 1994-P Jefferson Nickel and a mintage of 3,394,792 for the 1994-S Proof Jefferson Nickel.

The second matte finish coin would be issued within the 1997 Botanic Garden Coinage & Currency Set. These sets contained an uncirculated version of the 1997 Botanic Garden Silver Dollar, an uncirculated 1997 Jefferson Nickel, and a 1995 $1 Federal Reserve Note. Once again, the uncirculated nickel was produced with the special matte finish. The sets were priced at $36 during a pre-issue period. A sell out occurred before the conclusion of this period.

For this product, the US Mint announced a limited edition of only 25,000 sets. Anticipating a prompt sell out, special ordering procedures were followed. Orders would only accepted by mail with a post mark no earlier than February 21, 1997. Orders would be sorted based on the date and time the order was received. A decision would be made as to whether an ordering limit would be imposed. Then, orders would be processed up to the accepted limit in the sequence received.

Within the first week, a sell out was announced with an ordering limit of five sets per household established.
