Since its launch on 21 April 1983, the £1 has always represented the United Kingdom, with representations of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland or with the Royal Arms.
The first coin showed a detailed and intricate image of the Royal Coat of Arms. Designed by Eric Sewell, Chief Engraver at The Royal Mint, it has become one of the most famous images in British currency.
In 1988 a new design was created by Royal Mint engraver Derek Gorringe. Inspired by the Sovereigns of Queen Victoria, his elegant image shows a crowned shield of the Royal Arms.
The third design, first issued in 2008, is by artist Matthew Dent, who won the commission in an open competition. His modern version of the shield of the Royal Arms fills the coin to dramatic effect.
Silver proof coins are always in demand, and this set is especially desirable as it is the only way to own the Sewell and Gorringe £1 silver Proof coins dated 2013. With a very low issue limit of just 3,500 these silver Proof are very rare.Specification
